Abstract

This collection contains correspondence between Judge Justine Wise Polier and Eleanor Roosevelt sent between 1938-1962, with additional correspondence sent between Judge Polier and other individuals through 1972. The bulk of the correspondence between the two women is of a personal nature. There is also correspondence relating to US political and social concerns including WWII immigration quotas, Jewish refugees from various countries, settlement houses, education for racial minorities, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Records pertaining to the life and business activities of Walter Ornstein, proprietor of beauty salons and purveyor of cosmetics. These include business records and patents pertaining to Goubaud, the perfume business that Max and Elsa Fahrer began in Vienna and that Walter Ornstein reestablished in New York. Also included are photograph albums, song lyrics and letters from a suitor of Gertrude Goldschmidt that date to her life in Vienna prior to emigration and marriage to Walter Ornstein.

Abstract

The Wilmersdoerffer/Wilmers Family collection pertains to the family of the twins John Geoffrey Wilmers (né Hans Max Wilmersdoerffer) and Marianne Gourary (née Wilmersdoerffer), who were born in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, in 1920, and eventually emigrated to England and the United States, respectively. The collection contains a small amount of family papers, three family trees, and a few secondary materials containing biographical information pertaining to family members. Families mentioned in the family trees (originating in Bavaria and, in part in Württemberg) include: Wilmersdoerffer (Wilmers); Oberndoerffer; Haymann; Schimmelburg; and Nauheim (Norland).
