Abstract

This collection consists of the American Jewish Committee's project to document Jewish participation in the United States Armed Forces during World War I. The bulk of the material consists of questionnaires the AJC sent to servicemen to determine Jewish identity, which contain information on personal identification and details of military service. Responses to the questionnaire come from both Jews and non-Jews. In addition, the collection contains office papers concerning the project and a ledger of manuscripts documenting the distribution of records collected by the Office of Jewish War Records, as well as lists Jews who died or were given military honors.

Abstract

Collection consists of typed copies of various materials relating to the history of the Jews in Barbados including: a list of taxes charged to Jewish inhabitants (1679), extracts from the minute books of Congregation Nidhe Israel, and an index of names and ages from the census of Barbados taken in 1715. Also includes 10 photos (primarily of the synagogue) and an article about the tombstone inscriptions in the cemetary from Algemeiner Journal (1995).

Abstract

Twelve pages of notes on Jamaican Jewish history on Corcos' stationery containing material on the synagogues, Jewish societies, the Hebrew school, and appointments and elections of Jews to public office. Also includes excerpts from the Journals of the House of Assembly of Jamaica pertaining to the erection of a synagogue in 1687, two incidents of anti-Semitism, and an account of Jamaican Jewish history from J.H. Lawrence-Archer's monumental inscriptions.

Max James Kohler Papers

Abstract

The Papers of Max J. Kohler (1871-1934) document his life's work as lawyer, historian, writer, researcher, and defender of Jewish and immigrant rights. Correspondents include many of Kohler's contemporaries in the field of history and immigration law including Cyrus Adler; William Taft; John Bassett Moore; Mortimer Schiff; David Hunter Miller; Baron and Baroness de Hirsch; the Straus Family including Oscar Straus; Luigi Luzzatti; Leon Huhner; and Julian Mack. Subjects include U.S. immigration law, American-Jewish history, Col. Alfred Dreyfus, Haym Salomon, Ellis Island, Rabbi Kaufmann Kohler, the publication God in Freedom, international treaties, and the Peace Conference of 1919.
