Manuscripts (documents)

Series I of the collection pertains to Rabbi Leopold Rosenak's work as a field chaplain during World War I in Kaunas (Kowno) in Lithuania. It contains manuscripts by Rosenak including a report on his work as field chaplain in 1915, private and official correspondence (letters, cables) with individuals and institutions such as "Ausschuss fuer fahrbare Kriegsbuechereien an der Front", Leo Baeck, "Hilfsverein der deutschen Juden", "Kriegsministerium" (Prussian War Office), "Kaiserlich Tuerkisches Generalkonsulat zu Bremen" (Turkish Consulate in Bremen), and Erich Ludendorff. The correspondence documents in particular his activities for the native Jewish population in Lithuania in particular regarding food supplies and education, his service as a field chaplain, and his efforts to support and supply libraries for Prussian soldiers. The series contains, furthermore, various certificates of L. Rosenak, a typescript by L. Hoppe, Protestant field chaplain, titled "Ein Ostermorgen im Grossen Hauptquartier" (typescript, 3 pp.), and flyers in German and Yiddish inviting to services of L. Rosenak in Lida.

Poems and essays, both published and in manuscript form, as well as correspondence and some personal papers comprise this collection.

Collection of 151 letters written by Peter Bloch in New York to his colleague and friend Alfonso Ramirez in Venezuela. The letters, written in English, touch primarily on socialist ideological interpretations of world events, triggering commentaries about politics in North America, Europe (Germany) and Asia (mostly China). Also discussed are various aspects of the Caribbean islands and Latin America. Alfonso Ramirez’ replies in Spanish are not included.

The Lila and Leo Marx Collection contains the papers of this couple, with documentation about their early lives in Germany and the effects on their lives by Nazi persecution, their subsequent emigration, and the fates of their family members. Much of the collection focuses on their restitution claims and financial situation. The collection consists of a large amount of restitution correspondence; family correspondence; official, educational, and employment documents; a chronology and narrative of the lives of Lila and Leo Marx and their families; and a few photographic postcards.

The Lilian Singer Collection includes materials pertaining to the personal life and professional activities of Lilian Singer and some members of her family. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs; other materials include personal, educational, immigration, and professional documents, correspondence, and sketches.

The Lilli Liegner Collection centers on the work of this social worker and her role within the Jüdischer Frauenbund in Breslau. A smaller amount of material relates to the history and individual members of the Liegner and Rawicz families. Included in this collection are reports, correspondence, organizational papers and newspaper clippings on the Jüdischer Frauenbund of Breslau. In addition, the collection contains personal and official papers of family members along with a family tree and personal correspondence.

This collection contains personal and official papers and correspondence, and vital records documents pertaining to Fritz and Lilly Fabian and their families, including Lilly Fabian's papers from her time in the Theresienstadt camp and a short memoir by Fritz about life under the National Socialist oppression. The other major group of materials in this collection pertains to Fritz and Lilly Fabian's restitution claims and efforts to regain German citizenship.

This collection consists of papers of the Loewen family, including Samuel Liepmann Loewen and Liepmann (Leopold) Loewen. It includes personal, business and official papers, correspondence, genealogy, a collection of wax seals, some newspaper clippings, art prints, and a few photographs.

The collection contains materials about the Mandl and the Friedländer families, as well as the Friedländers’ friends, Otto Kokoschka and Heinrich Schnitzler.

The Lotte Strauss Collection documents Lotte and Herbert Strauss’ efforts to leave Germany, their experience in Switzerland and the fate of Lotte Strauss’ family during World War II. The collection includes clippings, eye-witness accounts, personal and official correspondence, vital, and immigration documents, lists, photographs, audio-visual materials, reports, and manuscripts.

Correspondence with individuals, including Alexander Altmann, Werner Cahnmann, Guido Kisch, Raphael Straus, and Max Warburg; business correspondence with publishers and organizations; correspondence with family members, including his brother, the novelist Lion Feuchtwanger.

This collection contains personal identification documents and school records of Alex Löwenstein, as well as a short manuscript on Grevenbroich and materials on antisemitic legislation.

The Ludwig Marum collection documents Ludwig Marum’s involvement with politics and Elisabeth Lunau’s genealogical research about the Marum family.

This collection holds the papers of rabbi Ludwig Philippson and other Philippson family members. Noteworthy items in this collection include handwritten manuscripts by Ludwig Philippson, correspondence between various family members, and diaries kept by Henriette and Moritz Philippson; the latter describes experiences as a medical student in Jena. In addition, the collection also holds manuscripts by the geographer Alfred Philippson that describe in depth family members as well as his experiences as a student, lecturer, and professor. Other items include detailed family trees, official papers, poems, notes, clippings, wills, and photographs.

The file contains the correspondence of Ludwig Pinner at the Central Bureau for the Settlement of German Jews of the Jewish Agency and comprises two folders.

The Ludwig Rosenthal Collection includes Ludwig Rosenthal’s writings as well as genealogical materials on the Rosenthal family.

This collection contains a handful of letters and a bound volume of Tachau's writings, including both handwritten manuscripts and offprints and clipings of published materials.

The collection contains various materials pertaining to Ludwig Tietz, collected by Gustav Horn.

The collection pertains to the life of Luise Antonie Lenel, known as Toni, and members of her extended family. It includes documents and photographs of her youth in Germany, correspondence and personal items from her time as a student in Europe, and extensive correspondence with her mother and siblings once she emigrated to the United States. Personal documents include an Ahnenpass, a required document of ancestry under the Nazi regime.

Three notebooks of biblical commentaries, some of which resemble sermons. The notebooks also contain drafts and notes for a work entitled "The true origin of the star system or cosmogony of Moses." There are also scattered loose notes on scraps of paper inserted into the notebooks.

This collection comprises the papers of the physician Manfred Mayer-Zachart, including material on his family, service in World War I and professional work. The papers include a large amount of family correspondence, including wartime letters, medical articles, and many photographs. In addition there is some professional correspondence and educational and family papers. Notes on patients are included in the collection but access to them is restricted.

The collection contains various documents relating to the Jewish communities in Chemnitz, Dresden and Hamburg in the late 1930s, as well as biographical information and personal documents regarding Manfred Saalheimer (1907-1967), legal representative of the Dresden Jewish community, and Josef Kahn (1881-?), president of the Chemnitz Jewish community. Also included are tributes to Otto Hirsch (1885-1941), president of Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland.

This collection contains a few of journalist Margarete Muehsam-Edelheim's personal papers and a number of clippings and manuscripts by Muehsam on law, feminism, Jewish affairs and emigration possibilities, and the German press.

This collection holds the papers of the author Margarete Susman, with a focus on the significant events of her life and her relationships with others. In addition to drafts of her memoirs the collection contains extensive correspondence with Gertrud Kantorowicz, Georg Simmel and Karl Wolfskehl. Other items include newspaper clippings, among them many obituaries, other correspondence, a few photographs and other papers.

Clippings, correspondence, published and unpublished articles on learning disabilities and music therapy; contains testimony on her experience in the internment camp of Gurs, France.

This collection consists mainly of the writings of Marianne Jorjorian (née Willdorff, married Dreifus, 1922-1977). A small portion relates to her death in 1977. After fleeing her hometown of Berlin, Germany in 1939, Marianne married Henry Dreifus, and the couple had Claudia Dreifus, who became a noted freelance journalist. Marianne was a troubled writer, artist, and waitress in New York City. She eventually married Aram Jorjorian and moved to Reno, Nevada. Her writings tend to be autobiographical and frequently deal with Nazi atrocities.
