This is the collection of Arthur A. Goren, a historian and professor of American Jewish history at the Hebrew University and Columbia University. This collection consists of his research material and professional files from his academic pursuits and career as a professor, primarily at Columbia University. Included in the collection are copies of articles and photocopies of archival material used for research, drafts of speeches and manuscripts, handwritten and typed research notes, correspondence, clippings, photographs, and teaching and course material such as syllabi, readings, notes, and bibliographies.

Abstract

This collection is comprised of correspondence and financial documents from and to the Central Committee Knesseth Israel Charity of Rabbi Maier Baal Haness from 1924 through 1950. The charity was a Jewish charity formed in 1924 in both Israel and the state of New York with the purpose of collecting contributions to help the state of Israel and American Jews. The collection contains charity donation records from 1924 through 1950.

Abstract

The collection contains eight (8) color slide photographs taken by Fred Firschein, a one-time resident of East New York, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Firschein writes in a letter regarding the collection, "The slides are dated May of 1962 and they depict a neighborhood area on Blake Ave. near Ashford St. There were push carts selling all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables, stores selling spices, sour pickles and sour tomatoes from the barrel and Morris Meat Market selling, of course, all kinds of Kosher meats."

Abstract

This collection documents the time Judah J. Shapiro spent as writer and broadcaster of the radio show “Highlights and Background of the Jewish News” on WEVD in New York City. He wrote and broadcast the show from 1971 until his death in 1980. The bulk of the collection is transcripts of the radio show. The show focused mainly on the politics and current affairs of the state of Israel.

Scope and Contents

Over 100 drawings, sketches, charcoal and watercolors, depicting scenes of Jewish life in Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. in the 1920s. Themes include the Jewish quarters of Warsaw, Lodz, Radom, Vilna, Kovno, Lemberg, Minsk, Paris, Venice, Safed. The drawings also depict Jews in kibbutzim and Hasidic Jews.
