Philosophy

The bulk of this collection consists of materials docmenting the research of Alexander Altmann on German and German-Jewish history, particularly the philosophy of Moses Mendelssohn.

The Babette B. Buch Collection documents the life, philosophies, and literary career of the writer Babette B. Buch. Included in this collection are numerous unpublished manuscripts, some personal correspondence, and a small amount of clippings and photographs.

The collection comprises typescripts; reprints; clippings; articles; circulars; and correspondence pertaining to the philosopher Constantin Brunner and the circle of his followers worldwide. Of interest are three manuscripts by Brunner himself, as well as a series of manuscripts by other authors, written either during Brunner’s lifetime or as commemorations of Brunner’s anniversaries. In particular, there are articles by Ferdinand Alquié, Magdalena Kasch, Abraham Klein, Ernst Ludwig Pinner and others. In addition, there are reports and circulars of the ‘Internationaal Constantin Brunner Instituut’ (the International Constantin Brunner Society), as well as announcements for the publications of Brunner’s books and their reviews.

This collection holds the papers of the philosophy professor E. Hans Freund. Notable subjects include the development of his professional life, the Freund family, and his experiences in Nazi Germany. The collection consists of correspondence, official documents, memoirs, manuscripts, official documents, and photographs.

The Edgar and Brigitte Bodenheimer Collection documents the professional and personal life of law professor Edgar Bodenheimer as well as that of his wife, Brigitte Bodenheimer (née Levy). The collection contains documentation on their early legal work during the 1940s, Edgar's participation in the Nuremberg Trials, and postwar work as professors, as well as material on their daily lives and other family members. The collection includes a copious amount of correspondence, lecture texts, certificates and diplomas, diaries and notebooks, newspaper clippings, teaching material, poetry, a friendship album, and other papers.

The Eugen Kullmann Estate Collection contains documentation of the professional life and personal connections of the philosophy and religion professor and scholar Eugen Kullman. Much of the collection is made up of his correspondence from others, but there are also many notes related to his teaching and research along with professional and official documents. Notes and papers of the philosopher Karl Joël also form a significant portion of this collection. The collection includes notes such as research and lecture notes as well as notebooks; extensive correspondence from others, including family, friends, and colleagues to Eugen Kullmann; and official, professional, and personal documents.

This collection offers an insight into the life of Fritz Kaufmann, philosopher and early disciple of Edmund Husserl and the phenomenologist movement. He lectured in philosophy at the Universities of Freiburg and Berlin until forced to leave the country and immigrating to the United States in 1938. The bulk of the collection focuses on Kaufmann's professional responses to the increasing restrictions of the Nazi Regime between the years of 1934 and 1936. Furthermore, the collection includes lecture scripts and a shorthand manuscript of Kaufmann relating to his last unfinished work, the introduction of Leo Baeck's book Aus drei Jahrtausenden.

The Max Rieser Collection predominantly documents the life and work of the lawyer, philosopher and writer Max Rieser. The main subjects of the collection are his life, his writing and his publishing work. The collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, official documents and photographs.

This collection contains materials by and about Ofra Core, her husband David Uriel Core, and her father-in-law, the noted German-Jewish and Israeli philosopher Hugo Bergmann (1883-1975). The collection contains correspondence from Hugo Bergmann as well as other materials about him and his family. Materials by Ofra and David Core are also found in this collection, and include a photo album, material about the Japanese religious group Mayuka, and some of Ofra's professional materials from her career as a records manager for the United Nations.

This collection contains correspondence between Horace M. Kallen and many important individuals and organizations, as well as manuscripts, notes and other materials for speeches, financial documents, research materials, academic records, and various other assorted items. These materials serve to illustrate Kallen’s important role in philosophy, education, religion, and politics and his deep involvement with consumer rights, environmental controls, Jewish issues, and civil liberties.

This collection comprises Paul Steiner's diaries and notebooks compiled in 1926-1945. It prominently features manuscripts of his writing, which consists of essays with philosophical or political content, short stories, plays and poetry. In addition, the collection holds drafts of letters to Thomas Mann and a few issues of the 'Kulturelle Schriftenreihe des Free Austrian Movement' (Cultural Series of the Free Austrian Movement).
