Chemnitz (Germany)

The collection contains documents and correspondence relating to the family of Julius Bernstein of Chemnitz, who headed the Marshel Frank Sachs A.G. in Chemnitz until his death in 1935. Included are birth, citizenship, and marriage certificates, eulogies for Julius and his wife, Elly Franck who perished in a car wreck in 1927. There are also biographical outlines and the 1935 Geschaeftsbericht (business report) for Marschel Frank Sachs A.G. in Chemnitz and the 1934 Satzungen (Statutes) and correspondence regarding Kurt Bernstein's immigration attempts and search for work under the Third Reich and afterwards. Folder 2 contains a manuscript regarding family history in Ostpreussen.

The collection contains documentation of the lives of Heimann Posener and Jenny née Reinhold in Germany and their emigration from Germany to the United States via England. Included are various identity cards; correspondence pertaining to obtaining American visas and ship tickets; and correspondence pertaining to storing furniture and household goods in Germany and shipping the items to the United States.

This collection comprises materials related to Hugo Fuchs, rabbi of Chemnitz from 1907-1939. Included here are are a small amount of his correspondence and some of his published writings. In addition, this collection holds visual material on Jewish places and themes and some items pertaining to the Goeritz family.

This collection contains Leopold Kraemer's certification documents as a teacher and cantor, professional recommendations, and liturgical sheet music.

The collection contains various documents relating to the Jewish communities in Chemnitz, Dresden and Hamburg in the late 1930s, as well as biographical information and personal documents regarding Manfred Saalheimer (1907-1967), legal representative of the Dresden Jewish community, and Josef Kahn (1881-?), president of the Chemnitz Jewish community. Also included are tributes to Otto Hirsch (1885-1941), president of Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland.

This collection contains a few childhood memoirs of Wolfgang Wassermann, as well as some of his father's, the lawyer Gustav Wassermann's, diplomas and educational papers.
