Augusta and Emil Mane Collection

Abstract

This collection contains the personal papers of Augusta (1905-2000) and Emil Mane (1900-1991) of Philippsburg, Baden, Germany. They were forced to sell their iron works business Gebrüder Gutmann in 1938 and, after Emil’s imprisonment in Dachau and time in an English refugee camp, they immigrated to the United States. The collection includes personal correspondence, emigration and restitution materials, recipes, photographs, a family tree, and a list of what happened to the Jews of Philippsburg during or after World War II.

Marianne Salinger Collection

Abstract

The Marianne Salinger Collection comprises a broad variety of personal and professional documents pertaining to Marianne Salinger and her family. Spanning four generations, the material is clustered around individual stories of several family members and their relationships, each illustrated by different document types and genres, including personal and official letters, diaries, clippings, photographs and slides, various certificates, advertisements, restitution papers, as well as a couple of annotated books of various genres such as children's books, one cookbook, one autobiography and a language textbook. Some translations are included.

Abstract

The collection documents the National Jewish Welfare Board's (JWB) evolution from an organization founded in 1917 to provide support for soldiers in times of war to an agency involved in all aspects of Jewish life both in the United States and abroad. In 1990 JWB recreated itself as the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America.

Paul Collin Manuscripts Collection

Abstract

The collection mainly comprises manuscripts of Paul Collin in English, including two autobiographical narrations in the form of typescripts; and four completed books (copies of typescripts, in binders) that he distributed to friends. Three of the books convey a mixture of personal reminiscences and ruminations on various historical, social and political topics; one is a collection of jokes, in both German and English. There is also a small binder of recipes handwritten in German, along with some recipes on loose notes, and a few items of miscellaneous correspondence, including one photograph. Also included are a tribute and an obituary for Collin that were published in bulletins of the Jewish Council of 1933 (San Francisco), of which he was a longtime member.
