The Adler Family Collection holds materials regarding the lives of Thekla (née Grünebaum) and Leopold Adler and their children Bennie, Rose, Irma, and Berthold. The papers document their lives in Hintersteinau, Germany, the deaths of Leopold and Irma Adler, and the emigration of the remaining family members to New York. This collection consists primarily of clippings and other published materials, amassed to illustrate the family trees of the Arnholds and related families, thus providing a picture of their activities as bankers, collectors, and public benefactors. Emphasis is given to the bank’s retirement plan, ’Gebrüder Arnholdscher Pensionsverein’ and to the art collector Eduard Arnhold and his foundation, Deutsche Akademie Rom Villa Massimo. Of special interest is a handwritten account about Kurt Arnhold’s escape from Germany to Holland in circa 1938.

Autobiographies of Jewish Youth in Poland

The collection consists of more than 300 autobiographies and supplementary biographical materials, such as correspondence, diaries, and documents collected by YIVO in the interest of Jewish youth research. The autobiographies were assembled through public competitions in 1932, 1934, and 1939 directed at Jewish youth aged 16-22. The collection also contains records of the contest, including lists of the contestants, correspondence with them, reports and clippings.

Baerwald Family Correspondence

The Baerwald Family Correspondence Collection primarily consists of a bound volume of handwritten correspondence of members of the Baerwald and related families. The correspondence is arranged chronologically, and dates from 1889 through 1919, with a gap between 1908 and 1919 and only a few letters from each year. The bulk of the correspondence is from Hermann Baerwald, director of the Philanthropin School in Frankfurt am Main, to his sons Paul and Emil and especially to his son-in-law Johannes Behrendt (called Hans) and daughter Elise (called Lieschen), although letters of other extended family members are also present.
