Jews -- Intellectual life

These are papers presented at a symposium, sponsored by the Leo Baeck Institute, held in Haifa, Israel, on March 13-15, 1983. Manuscripts from three additional presentations were not submitted for this collection.

This collection includes materials documenting the activities and publications of independent and activist American Jewish organizations. Sample news publications from a variety of independent presses are included, as are a variety of home-published newsletters and flyers. The collection addresses anti-war protests and U.S. draft avoidance; American Jewish activism on Israel; feminist involvement in Judaism; socialism and radicalism; and international affairs. Materials include newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, news clippings, articles, limited correspondence, speech notes, reports, and flyers.

The collection contains letters and postcards to Leo Herrmann, his wife Lola Herrmann, and daughter Ruth Herrmann from various senders, including Max Brod, Franz Werfel, George Bernard Shaw, Martin Buber, and Albert Einstein.

The collection contains materials about the Mandl and the Friedländer families, as well as the Friedländers’ friends, Otto Kokoschka and Heinrich Schnitzler.

This collection contains documents and records accumulated by Elias Tcherikower in his capacity as co-founder of YIVO, member of the Executive Office, and Chair of the Historical Section, 1925-1943. It is particularly significant for its records of the YIVO Historical Section, and extensive correspondence documenting the founding of the Institute.
