Translations

This collection contains material relating to the personal and professional activities of Eva Dukes. It includes personal correspondence from 1938 to 1943 and materials about Dukes's teenage years as a student at the Schwarzwaldschule in Vienna. Professional materials relating to her work as a writer, researcher and translator include correspondence about her search for two favorite children's books from her youth, Jüdische Kindermärchen (1932) by Ilse Weber (née Herlinger) and Das verschlossene Buch; juedische Maerchen (1925) by Irma Singer (aka Irma Miriam Berkowitz). Also found here are typescripts of selected translations from these books into English, as well as extensive correspondence between Dukes and Singer, after Dukes discovered Singer living in Israel in the 1970s.

The collection holds original translations and clippings of Russian and Yiddish literature into German by Fega Frisch. Also included are some personal documents, such as education records and ID papers.

Personal papers and writings of Frida Ilmer Grosser, documenting her career as a scholar of German literature.

This collection contains detailed lists, compiled by Friedrich R. Wollmershaeuser, about archival material from various towns at the State Archives in Bamberg and Augsburg. Also included are copies of some of the original archival material.

The Kaethe Placzek Collection contains family correspondence of Kaethe Placzek and her husband Julian Spiegel. Such correspondence includes letters sent to Kaethe by her parents while they were separated during summers, often while they attended health spas. Letters sent by Julian Spiegel are to his parents, especially during his time in World War I.

This collection contains translations into German of selections of scholarly works about the Karaites. Done under orders from the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR), the translations were meant to assist the Nazis in determining if the Karaites were to be considered Jewish or not. The work was supervised by Zelig Kalmanowicz in the Vilna Ghetto from 1942 to 1943.

The bulk of the Kate and Herman Hoerlin Collection consists of the personal correspondence between Kate Tietz Schmid (later Hoerlin) and Herman Hoerlin in prewar Germany, 1934-1938. In addition are documents pertaining to Kate Schmid's insistence of reparations from the Third Reich for the wrongful murder of her first husband Willi Schmid and to the complexities of Kate Hoerlin's classification as a Mischling under the Nuremberg Laws, including how this factored into Kate and Hermann Hoerlin's efforts to wed when a Jewish/ Aryan marriage was forbidden. Other professional and official documents are included.

This collection contains the research files of Melinda Guttmann on Bertha Pappenheim, also known as "Anna O." It is primarily comprised of documentation of Melinda Guttmann's work on Bertha Pappenheim as well as extensive accumulated research on her, most of which has been translated into English. Included are Melinda Guttmann's manuscripts and notes, as well as copies of many articles on Bertha Pappenheim and the culture and time in which she lived.

This collection documents the research of Jewish historian Samuel Oppenheim (1857-1928) concerning the lives of colonial Jews in the Americas, and the early history of the United States. Included in the collection are his notes, transcripts of original works, photocopies of the records of the Dutch West India Company, correspondence relating to his research, his writings, and original documents from the Mayor’s Court of the City of New York that date from 1653-1760.

This collection includes documents related to the activities of Barbara Staudacher and Heinz Högerle pertaining to the former Jewish community in the village of Rexingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
