Printed materials

The Joseph Shubow Collection documents the life and professional activities of Joseph Shubow, military Chaplain, leader of the Congregation B’nai Moshe, Boston, MA and a prominent American Zionist leader. The collection includes correspondence, documents, lists, writings, speeches and sermons notes, photographs, and printed materials. Materials constituting the collection reflect various aspects of Joseph Shubow’s personal and professional life, religious leadership and writings in the fields of Judaism and Jewish history.

The Julius Buchwald Collection consists of manuscripts, musical compositions, family correspondence, and printed materials. The bulk of the collection consist of Julius Buchwald’s writings and musical compositions, most of which were composed in the late 1930s.

The Lekisch Family collection documents personal and professional activities of Kurt Lekisch, a medical doctor originally from Mainz, Germany, who was active in his profession as well as academic research until his death in Texas in 1994. The collection also includes a small series on other members of the Lekisch family. The material mainly reflects his work as a doctor in the US but also as a volunteer practitioner in India and as a practitioner in Rhodesia. His active life as a medical researcher and publisher can be seen in his numerous publications; some of which derive from his studies at universities in Germany, Switzerland, and the US. Although the bulk of the documents consist of manuscripts and printed material, the collection also includes correspondence, photos, vital documents, and a range of certificates.

The Leo Glueckselig Collection includes materials pertaining to Leo Glueckselig and other members of the Glueckselig family and consists mostly of personal correspondence, photographs, and documents, whereas other document types such as printed materials, manuscripts, art works, and a cookbook constitute a smaller part of the collection.

The Lilian Singer Collection includes materials pertaining to the personal life and professional activities of Lilian Singer and some members of her family. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs; other materials include personal, educational, immigration, and professional documents, correspondence, and sketches.

The collection consists of newspaper clippings, theater programs, and concert programs for the Weiss Quartett.

The Lotte Strauss Collection documents Lotte and Herbert Strauss’ efforts to leave Germany, their experience in Switzerland and the fate of Lotte Strauss’ family during World War II. The collection includes clippings, eye-witness accounts, personal and official correspondence, vital, and immigration documents, lists, photographs, audio-visual materials, reports, and manuscripts.

The Ludwig Marum collection documents Ludwig Marum’s involvement with politics and Elisabeth Lunau’s genealogical research about the Marum family.

The Ludwig Rosenthal Collection includes Ludwig Rosenthal’s writings as well as genealogical materials on the Rosenthal family.

From its inception in 1961, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture (later known as the Foundation for Jewish Culture) supported Jewish scholarship, art, and community services. The collection primarily covers the period between 1959, when the original study proposing the creation of the NFJC was conducted by the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds (CJFWF) and 2015, when the Foundation ceased operations. The materials document organization’s support for Jewish scholarship, art, culture, and its work in strengthening the relationships between cultural institutions and local Jewish communities. The collection also documents the organization’s shift in the 1980s from scholarship to more involvement in Jewish arts and culture.

The Otto Ehrlich Collection documents the life and professional activities of Otto Ehrlich, economist, lecturer, advertisement artist, and teacher. The collection includes brochures, booklets, clippings, correspondence, financial and immigration documents, minutes, notes, photographs, photo collages, examples of his advertisement work, printed materials and writings. Documents comprising the collection reflect various aspects of Otto Ehrlich’s personal and professional life, teaching, research and writings in the fields of economics, and to a lesser extent his involvement with the field of advertisement and music.

The Otto Mainzer collection documents the life and professional activities of Otto Mainzer, lawyer, writer, and financial consultant; the collection also sheds light on the life of Otto Mainzer’s wife, Ilse Wunsch, a musician and a teacher. The collection includes correspondence, financial, vital, immigration, and legal documents, notes, photographs, printed materials, and writings, by Otto Mainzer and Ilse Wunsch as well as a small number of manuscripts by other authors. The collection is divided into two distinct sections, one pertaining to Otto Mainzer and the other to Ilse Wunsch.

The David Ribacoff papers consistsphotographs and the personal and professional correspondence and papers of David Ribacoff. The papers highlight David Ribacoff’s involvement with the American Sephardi Federation and other Jewish organizations.

The Michael Bernet Collection includes genealogical materials pertaining to Bernet and other related families from areas around Nuernberg and Fuerth in Germany Materials were collected to establish a Standard Pedigree Tree for Manfred Michael Bernet. They consist of copies of original documents from various archives, some family correspondence, printed materials such as clippings as well as copies of the Nuernberg/Fuerth Newsletter.

The Peter Bloch Collections includes mostly personal materials pertaining to various members of the Bloch family. Included in the collection are correspondence, documents, printed materials, and writings.

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Peter Amann, mostly correspondence but also including family papers, personal and professional writings, publicity materials relating to Peter Amann’s wife, and other personal documents. These materials reflect his role as a professor, author and prominent American historian as well as providing information about the rest of his family, including his father Paul Amann.

The Peter Lipman-Wulf Collection documents the life and professional activities of Peter Lipman-Wulf, a sculptor and a teacher; it includes correspondence, writings and interviews, printed materials, personal, professional, and financial documents, and drawings. The bulk of the collection consists of both, personal and professional correspondence and biographical and professional writings with other types of materials constituting a far smaller portion of the collection.

The collection consists of research materials on the history of Philipp Brothers collected by Helmut Waszkis for his book Philipp Brothers: the Rise and Fall of a Trading Giant, 1901-1990.

The Ralph Bettelheim Collection includes materials documenting Ralph Bettelheim’s involvement with the Committee for Fair Play in Sports working towards boycotting the Olympic Games in Germany in 1936 and genealogical materials on the Bettelheim family. Included in the collection are correspondence, brochures, and clippings, copies of vital documents, genealogical charts and family trees.

The collection includes conventional proceedings, speeches, annual reports, informational pamphlets, and other public documents of the organized Jewish Community of New York City, formed in 1908 and incorporated in 1914.

The collection includes materials pertaining to the Jewish Defense Organization, a radical Zionist Jewish organization devoted to protecting Jews from their enemies, imaginary and real, using all means possible. Collection consists of correspondence, financial documents, legal documents, such as depositions, subpoenas, transcripts, and a large amount of printed materials. The bulk of the materials consist of a variety of printed materials and materials pertaining to a number of legal cases against various members of the Jewish Defense Organization and the organization itself.

The Richard Lebrecht Collection includes genealogical and other types of materials pertaining to the Lebrecht, Gutmann, and Einstein families as well as materials dealing with the personal life and professional activities of Richard Lebrecht. The collection includes a wealth of original genealogical materials such as charts, tables, documents, photographs, and correspondence as well as materials pertaining to Richard Lebrecht.

The Richard May Collection consists most entirely of typed manuscripts by Richard May, writer and journalist. Most of the manuscripts date between 1949 and 1963. Also included here are documents, correspondence, and printed materials.

The Rudolf Loeb Collection consists of materials fragmentary in nature that deal primarily with the Loeb family and the banking house Mendelssohn & Co. Included in the collection are correspondence, documents, photographs, and printed materials.

The Ruth Gay Collection consists of Ruth Gay’s research material for her book The Jews of Germany: A Historical Portrait and includes numerous copies of the documents from the 1930s, photographs and illustrations used in the book and audio tapes with 11 interviews with German Jews living in Israel.

In 1961 Samuel L. Sumberg received a grant from the Leo Baeck Institute in New York to work on a project entitled Jewish Directors of the German Stage. Included in the collection are his notes, writings, correspondence and printed materials related to the subject. This work was not published.

The Steven M. Lowenstein Collection documents professional activities of Steven Lowenstein, writer, researcher, historian, and teacher and consists of manuscripts, printed materials, statistical data, and correspondence. Documents comprising the collection reflect Dr. Lowenstein’s interests in a wide spectrum of topics related to Jews and Judaism, such as modernity and tradition and their influence on the religion and common folks, Berlin Jews of the upper strata, similarities and differences between agrarian/rural and urban Jews, Eastern and Western Jewry, popular and official Judaism, and secular and religious Jews, to name but a few topics.

The Steven Lowenstein Collections documents professional activities of Steven Lowenstein, writer, researcher, historian, and teacher. Documents comprising the collection reflect Dr. Lowenstein’s interests in a wide spectrum of topics related to Jews and Judaism, such as modernity and tradition and their influence on the religion and common folks, Berlin Jews of the upper strata, similarities and differences between agrarian/rural and urban Jews, popular and official Judaism, secular and religious Jews, and other Jewish related topics. However, there is a very small amount of materials related to Dr. Lowenstein’s professional activities other than research and writing.

The Steven Schwarzschild Collection documents professional activities of Steven S. Schwarzschild, researcher, philosopher, rabbi and teacher. It also documents (to a much smaller degree) the personal lives of Steven Schwarzschild and his wife Lily. The collection includes brochures, booklets, clippings, correspondence, notes, off prints, photographs, printed materials, and writings. Documents comprising the collection shed light on Steven Schwarzschild’s education, and reflect various aspects of Steven Schwarzschild’s involvement with Judaism, as leader of Jewish congregations in Fargo, North Dakota and Lynn, Massachusetts; his academic career, research and writings in the fields of philosophy and theology.

This collection consists of materials relating to Jewish life in countries around the world from 1778-1957. Topics include cultural and educational organizations, political parties and elections, charitable institutions, labor, and religious life.
