Addenda to the John (Hans) and Trude Schiff Collection

Abstract

The John D. Schiff Collection contains both photographic prints and negatives of John D. and Trude Schiff’s photography careers. The subjects are predominantly portraits of artists and their works. Highlights include portraits of Ludwig Bemelmans and his Madeline illustrations, as well as photographic prints of Marcel Duchamp's Twine installation. and many other photographs of works of art.

Greta Loebl Collection

The collection documents the private and artistic life of Greta Loebl, an American artist who was born in Vienna and immigrated to the United States in 1939. As an artist, she was professionally known under her married name, Greta Schreyer. Besides correspondence of a personal and business nature, the collection comprises photographs of the artist, family members and her artwork as well as various collected documents, articles and items meaningful to the artist. A remarkable part of the collection consists of her former husband Oskar Schreyer’s correspondence concerning the immigration of his own parents, Chaim Eisig and Pessie Schreyer, as well as his of parents-in-law, Sigmund and Irene Loebl and of his sister and brother-in-law, Gusti and Mosei Graboi. Furthermore, Schreyer’s personal correspondences are enclosed in the collection.

Financial, business, and personal papers of the Eltzbacher family and related families, including correspondence, architectural plans, financial ledgers, wills and testaments, clippings, and eulogies; of particular interest is the business correspondence of Count Aloys zu Kaunitz-Rietberg with the banker Jacob Loeb Eltzbacher (1758-1825), who was based in Neuenkirchen, Westphalia, along with supporting documents and records; material on the career of the lawyer Carl Eltzbacher (1854-1936), including clippings on his candidacy to the Cologne city council in 1903 and correspondence, including a letter from Konrad Adenauer.

Abstract

This is a collection of clippings pertaining mostly to German-Jewish individuals, whose life, accomplishment, or death had been noteworthy enough to trigger the interest of an editor at a newspaper or a journal. From the 1960s to the end of the 20th century, archivists at the Leo Baeck Institute perused dailies, immigrants’ journals and periodicals of special interest groups in the United States, in Israel, in various European countries and beyond to discover traces of the scattered survivors of German-speaking Jewry. Birthday celebrations, special anniversaries and obituaries as well as reports about deeds and accomplishments were clipped from the publications and collected. Today, these clippings bear testimony of all these individuals’ lives and German speaking Jewry as a whole.

This collection documents the professional and personal lives of John (Hans) and Trude Schiff, with emphasis on John Schiff's career as a professional photographer. Although the greater part of the collection focuses on his photography, the collection additionally holds papers pertaining to the Schiffs' immigration, legal and financial papers pertaining to restitution from Germany, documentation of Trude Schiff's early medical career, and personal correspondence and photographs. Aside from the preponderance of photographs, the collection holds letters, address books, exhibit catalogs, and official documents, and a few clippings.

Otto Fantl Collection

Abstract

The three scrapbooks (“Stammbücher”) by Otto Fantl were his guest books in his house in Prague. Visitors – individuals working in politics, art, literature, and science – signed the pages, often adding comments, mostly in Czech, but also in German, French, English, and Russian. There is a total of 272 entries, accompanied by obituaries and other clippings, as well as handwritten notes and photographs, providing further information about the various individuals.

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Abbo Ostrowsky, including correspondence with many important figures from the art world, several of whom had been students of Ostrowsky at the Educational Alliance Art School.
