Abstract

The collection contains Bernard G. Richards personal and official correspondence, papers from his involvement with the American Jewish Congress and Jewish Information Bureau, published and unpublished writings, publications collected by Richards, articles about Richards and his activities, correspondence and articles from testimonial dinners in honor of Richards, and photographs. Significant correspondents include Joseph Barondess, Louis D. Brandeis, Vladimir Jabotinsky, J.L. Magnes, Louis Marshall, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jacob H. Schiff, Philip Slomovitz, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, Morris Winchovsky, and Stephen S. Wise.

Abstract

Includes Avukah and IZFA publications, reports, and bulletins collected by Sumner Alpert, who served as national President for Avukah and the Intercollegiate Zionist Federation of America. Material consists of Alpert's personal notes and history of Avukah and IZFA, "Zionism on Campus" written by Alpert for "Jewish Education" in 1947, "The Brandeis Avukah Volume of 1936", Avukah bulletins from 1944-1945, Avukah convention reports from 1942 and 1945, various Avukah publications, IZFA constitution and 1948 report, IZFA convention reports from 1945-1950, a IZFA Zionism on campus manual, and National Student Zionist Conference report from 1954.

Abstract

The collection consists primarily of the author's unpublished manuscripts and songs (set to music); printed texts of plays, short stories, essays and other literary works; material relating to several organized attempts to ban The merchant of Venice from the NYC public school curriculum; personal documents and correspondence; newspaper clippings; and other material utilized as sources for his writings. The correspondence is primarily with publishers and Emanuel Neumann and relating to Zionism in general.

It also contains a detailed record, consisting of letters, a dated handwritten account, and news clippings, of the 1927 Zionist Convention in Atlantic City, centering on an internal schism as to the competence of the Lipsky administration, as well as some follow-up material in 1928. Prominent in these papers is correspondence with Louis D. Brandeis; also represented are Henrietta Szold and Chaim Weizmann.

The Hadassah Microfilm Collection consists of 16mm and 35mm reels containing images of various Hadassah publications, administrative documents, and personal archival material. Content includes on-site photographs, membership and organizational documents, regional chapter lists and histories, items relating to Hadassah’s Zionist political history, and a near-complete run of Hadassah Newsletter/Magazine. Other than the newsletter/magazine run, all images are unique within the collection.

Abstract

This record group contains personal papers and special collections documenting individuals, both Hadassah members and non-Hadassah members, who were important to Hadassah. Much of the material forming the collections in this record group came from the administrative files of the national office of Hadassah, though some of the material was donated to Hadassah. Key individuals represented within this record group include Hadassah national board members Anna Tulin Elyachar, Bertha S. Schoolman, and Denise Tourover Ezekiel, as well as Jesse Zel Lurie who served as the first professional editor of Hadassah Magazine (originally Hadassah Newsletter) from 1947 to 1980.

Includes correspondence with the American Jewish Committee, National Americanization Committee, National Conference of Jewish Charities, New York City Board of Education, and the U.S. Dept. of Labor Immigration Bureau relating to the work of the association. Contains also the correspondence of Cyrus Adler, Ludwig Bernstein, Louis d. Brandeis, Lee K. Frankel, Israel Friedlander, Oscar Leonard, Louis Levin, Irving Lipsitch, Minnie F. Low, Louis Marshall, Belle Moskowitz, Milton Reizenstein, H.L. Sabsovich, Philip Seman, and Morris D. Waldman.
