Walter, Greta and Karl Loewenstein Collection

This collection holds papers of members of the Loewenstein family, especially Walter and Karl Loewenstein. Among the papers here are examples of Walter Loewenstein's writing, documentation of life in Rietberg in Westphalia (Germany) during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and correspondence concerning the fate of several family members during this time. Papers relating to Karl Loewenstein focus on his wartime activities. The genealogy of the Brandenstein family is also represented here along with a few papers of other family members. The collection consists of unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, official and restitution documentation, notebooks and notes, genealogical research, and fliers.

The bulk of the collection contains material pertaining to Jewish life in Braunschweig, Germany, before World War II, including documents from Walter Heinemann's life in Braunschweig during the 1930s and material pertaining to the larger Jewish community and its prominent members. The Weinberg Oppenheimer Family Collection contains the papers of these families, with documentation primarily about Zacharias Oppenheimer, Leopold Oppenheimer, and Hermann and Bella (née Oppenheimer) Weinberg. The collection centers on the Weinberg family members' emigration to America as well as Leopold Oppenheimer and Hermann Weinberg's time in World War I. The collection includes many family and wartime photographs and a photo album of Leopold Oppenheimer's fraternity brothers, official documents and other papers used in the Weinbergs' emigration, family and emigration correspondence, documents related to the death of Zacharias Oppenheimer, newspaper clippings, a few diary entries, and other papers.

Wilhelm Buchheim Collection

The collection contains various personal documents of Wilhelm Buchheim and numerous lectures he gave in English and German. Lectures in folder 2 include English language (held in London) "Does Anti-Semitism Affect the Character of the Jews?" and "Education in Germany" . Germany language lectures include "Das Jüdische Kind und seine Umwelt" "Apologetische Fragen im Religionsunterricht" "Die Neuordnung der Lehrerbildung." Folder 3 contains clippings, often on pedagogical topics, with some articles by Buchheim, others by Gustav Krojanker. The Jewish newspapers include "Gemeindeblatt Essen", "Jüdische Schulzeitung" and "Blätter fuer Erziehung und Unterricht."

This collection contains the personal papers of physician and Jewish heredity researcher William Nussbaum, his wife Lotte née Frankfurther, their son Michael, and Lotte’s mother Toni Frankfurther. William immigrated to the United States in 1935, and Lotte and their sons joined him a year later to settle in Kew Gardens (New York, N.Y.). Materials include a large amount of personal correspondence, family trees, photographs, restitution materials, education records, scrapbooks, William Nussbaum’s creative writing, a friendship album, a cookbook, a small number of William Nussbaum’s professional certificates and publications, and materials related to research conducted on William Nussbaum.
