This collection contains the papers of the journalist, author, translator, and diplomat Herman Bernstein. It documents his work on behalf of Eastern European and Russian Jews and holds correspondence, memos, writings and translations by Herman Bernstein, writings by others, contracts, clippings, printed matter, and photographs.

Herman Hertzovitz Benevolent Association, Inc., was founded in 1932 and operated as a stand-alone organization until 2008, when it merged with an active burial society (although its last meeting was held in 1988).

This record group includes meeting minutes (December 1965-September 1988) and the organization's constitution in English and Yiddish.

The collection contains the records of the Vilna branch of the Hevrah Mefitsei Haskalah, an educational and publishing organization, established in 1863 to propagate secular knowledge and acculturation into the Russian society among the Jews of the Pale of Settlement. The Vilna Branch was organized in 1909 to assist Jewish education in Vilna and vicinity. During World War I and after Vilna became a part of independent Poland, the organization continued to propagate secular education and maintain schools, libraries and teachers’ courses. The materials include minutes, correspondence, memoranda, programs, leaflets, announcements, and clippings.

Collection primarily features key figures of HICEM and HIAS's respective staffs: Isaac Asofsky (Executive Director of HIAS), Max Gottschalk (President of HICEM), Ilja Dijour (Executive Secretary of HICEM), Louis Spiegler (HICEM Counsel), Solomon Dingol (HIAS Director of Public Relations), and others.

This subseries consists of correspondence between HIAS and HICEM Main Offices in New York and various European countries. It is geographically divided and covers the time periods as noted below. All materials are in English, unless otherwise noted.

This subseries consists of materials pertaining to Latin America and various Latin American countries generated by HIAS and HICEM's main offices in New York and Europe. Materials are geographically divided and cover the following locations, among others: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, British Honduras, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Surinam, Trinidad, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Materials primarily are in English, Yiddish, or Spanish, unless noted otherwise.

Series primarily deals with materials produced by HIAS-New York branch as part of their efforts to facilitate Jewish refugee immigration into Palestine. A significant amount of correspondence is between members of HIAS and HICEM from different global branches, as well as members of other advocacy organizations. Most materials are in English, Yiddish, or Hebrew, with exceptions noted.

Minutes of the Board of Directors and of the annual meetings. Minutes of meetings of permanent and ad hoc committees of HIAS, including the Executive Committee, Committee on Work in Foreign Countries, U.S. Immigration Stations (later Committee on Overseas Work), Budget, Membership, House and Shelter, Citizenship, Law and Work in Palestine.

This collection consists mainly of briefs and other legal documents on immigration, deportations, and similar matters, ranging from 1905 until 1923. It also contains material on general HIAS activities.
