The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (also known as the JDC) was founded on November 27, 1914, in order to facilitate and centralize the collection and distribution of funds by American Jews for Jews abroad. This collection consists of the German case files of the JDC (dating from 1929 to 1947). The records document various individuals’ immigration attempts. Although the JDC was at first reluctant to aid individuals directly, this became necessary after the outbreak of World War II. Documents concerning many prominent individuals may be found in this collection.

Bernhard Kahn dedicated 50 years of his life to welfare activities in order to help distressed Jews. Among others he worked for the Hilfsverein der deutschen Juden, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Comittee and the American Joint Reconstruction Foundation .The collection contains personal as well as professional correspondence, articles on Bernhard Kahn’s work and biography, lectures and speeches by him and a number of official documents such as letters of consignment, citizenship papers and educational and professional certificates.

This collection contains the records of Ira H. Jolles’ activities with the Cahnman Foundation, a philanthropic organization which funded projects dedicated to the preservation and care of Jewish archives, architecture, and culture. It consists primarily of correspondence relating to funded projects, including their planning and scope. Also included are several years worth of Board of Director meeting minutes and select legal documents from the Estate of Gisella Levi Cahnman.

This collection consists of photocopies of memos and reports of the German occupying forces in France concerning deportations and other measures against Jews living in France. The documents were compiled by the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporain and sent to the American Joint Distribution Committee.

The Elizabeth W. Trahan Collection documents the personal and professional life of Elizabeth Welt Trahan, who was active as a scholar and writer and taught for several years at various universities in the U.S. Her autobiographical materials, such as her diary, reflect her personal view on Vienna, Austria during World War II. Other papers include personal documents, correspondence, a diary and other autobiographical manuscripts.

This collection contains photocopies of documents, photographs, and genealogical tables pertaining to the family of Evelyn Pearl (Perl) of Berlin and the related Wachsmann (Waxman) and Heimann families.

The bulk of the collection consists of materials pertaining to the Friedlander/Friedlaender families, descendents of the prominent banker and member of the Prussian House of Lords, Dagobert Friedlaender (1826-1904) from Kolmar, Posen (Chodzież, Poland). Also included are correspondence and other materials, documenting the efforts of Frieda Friedlander to assist the work of OSE in France and in the United States after World War II.

This collection primarily documents the professional life of the social worker Gertrude van Tijn, who worked with Jewish refugees in Amsterdam during the 1930s-1940s. Much of the material focuses on the experiences of Dutch Jewry along with the German-Jewish refugees who had fled to Holland. About half the collection relates to the manual training farm Werkdorp Nieuwesluis. Some reports on the postwar refugee situation in Shanghai and Australia and biographical material are also present. The collection includes reports, correspondence, official documents, newspaper clippings and articles and a few photographs.

This collection comprises documents related to the Graf family from Offenbach, Germany. There are several photographs as well as official documents and letters.

This collection contains personal papers of the Glanz and Hacker family members. Included are materials related to the education, emigration, marriage, and career of photographer Jakob Glanz, his brother Heinrich Glancz, and his son-in-law Emil Hacker. A written interview with Gertrude Hacker née Glanz is also included.

The Jews in Shanghai Collection contains an assortment of original and photocopied documentation of Jews in Shanghai during the 1930s and 1940s. In addition it includes an abundance of personal narratives, newspaper clippings and scholarly articles on this subject as well as on the origins of the Jewish Community in Shanghai.

This collection mainly consists of documents related to Kurt Baeck’s emigration to the Dutch East Indies and Shanghai and immigration to the United States. The materials include immigration documents, identity cards, financial papers, travel documents, and employment records.

This collection consists of documents of the Nothmann family, including personal correspondence and official documents, such as passports and certificates. A lot of the material is about or from the time of the Nazi persecution.
