The Elk-Zernik Family Collection provides documentation on the lives of several family members, especially Rabbi Max (Meir) Elk, dentist Benjamin Elk, Helmut Zernik and Charlotte Elk Zernik. The collection also holds the written compositions of several family members, including the sermons and articles of Max Elk and the autobiographical writing of Charlotte Elk Zernik. Other material includes a photo album and family photographs, a scrapbook, official papers and certificates, letters, some correspondence and clippings.

Emil and Alice Plaut Collection

Documents, certificates, personal correspondence, legal correspondence and legal documents regarding Emil and Alice Plaut; the death of their son, Felix, in England; their subsequent emigration to the United States; and their efforts to obtain financial restitution from the West German government. The collection also contains numerous documents relating to the Plauts’ personal bank accounts, and several items relating to their business, Plaut Business Service, in New York.

Emil Schorsch Collection

Abstract

Emil Schorsch was a rabbi in Hanover, Germany, from 1927 through 1938. He immigrated first to England and then the United States, where he served as a rabbi in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, from 1940 until 1964. Throughout his career he was a strong proponent of conservative Judaism. The collection documents both his personal and professional life. The records consist of his writings, including sermons, lectures, and speeches. Also included is an extensive amount of correspondence, as well as material documenting the fate of the Jewish community in Hanover.

Emily Phillips, papers

Abstract

Contains printed and manuscript letters, written in English, Yiddish and Hebrew, requesting funds, addressed to Emily Phillips from the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, private individuals and private institutions.

Of special interest are a printed announcement of the investiture of Jacob Saul ben Eliezer Elyasher as Haham Bashi, and a series of letters in which Simon Muhr, acting on Miss Phillips' behalf, undertook to discover, through inquiries of Lazard Freres, France, whether the claims of a petitioner were correct. Includes also a printed New Year's greeting to Miss Phillips signed by a petitioner.

This collection documents the life of anarchist writer Erich Muehsam and his wife Kreszentia (Zenzl) Muehsam. It consists primarily of correspondence from Erich and Zenzl to family and friends, as well as some correspondence between others about them. The collection also contains a small selection of Muehsam's writings and poems, including some typescripts, a few personal items, photographs, and printed materials about Muehsam such as newspaper articles and exhibition catalogs.

This collection holds personal and official documents, correspondence, genealogical information, biographical manuscripts and photographs related to the Feith, Lyon and Katz families. Most of the documents pertain to Erna Bonette, Fred Gustav and their son Henry Arthur Katz. The collection focuses on their lives in Germany and the United States as well as their emigration via Luxemburg and Portugal. It also holds materials pertaining to members of the extended Katz and Lyon families and their ancestors, including the Feith family. This collection contains the papers of Ernest W. Michel, Holocaust Survivor Journalist and public speaker,including clippings of newspaper articles written by and about Michel, correspondence between Michel and many important Jewish and political figures and autograph files, which Michel collected. Many of these files concern Michel’s Holocaust experiences, speaking engagements, the World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, and Michel’s work with the United Jewish Appeal.

Ernst Heumann Family Collection

The Ernst Heumann Family Collection documents three generations of this family, including members of the Messer, van Gelder, Oppenheim, Haas, and related families. Much of the collection centers on how the businessman Ernst Heumann and his wife Hedi née Messer established themselves in the United States and built their family, although documentation on their early lives in Germany and their emigration is also present. Although the bulk of the collection consists of the family's extensive personal correspondence, official and personal documents are also a central part of the collection. This collection contains the papers of Ernst Mueller: mathematician, writer, philosopher and librarian. The most prominent material here are his unpublished writings, including autobiographical items such as diaries and memoirs along with essays, articles and drafts of longer works.
