Abstract

The collection contains a comprehensive or nearly comprehensive collection of the newsletter sent regularly to former members of the Bar Kochba and Theodor Herzl academic associations of Prague which existed in the first part of the 20th century. Numerous prominent writers, scientists, lawyers, doctors, and other men and women of note stemming from German-speaking families of Bohemia published historical, political, and scientific essays, articles, and letters in the pages of the internationally-distributed newsletter. The newsletters in this collection were mailed to Robert Weltsch, a member and frequent contributor.

Collection consists of typed copies of various materials relating to the history of the Jews in Barbados including: a list of taxes charged to Jewish inhabitants (1679), extracts from the minute books of Congregation Nidhe Israel, and an index of names and ages from the census of Barbados taken in 1715. Also includes 10 photos (primarily of the synagogue) and an article about the tombstone inscriptions in the cemetary from Algemeiner Journal (1995).

Baruch Cohen Family Memorial Book

Abstract

Collection contains a copy of the published memorial book and its English translation. The first generation described in the book is Rabbi Yehuda, the son of Rabbi Eliezer Halevi Mintz, the Askenazi Rabbi in the city of Padua, Italy, who died in the Hebrew year 5269 [1509]. The book, which covers the years 1461-1920, was translated from Hebrew by S.J. Sacks.

The papers of Bayard Rustin, a prominent American civil rights leader, LGBT rights activist, and advocate for the Black-Jewish cooperation in the United States, that focus on his involvement in the American Soviet Jewry movement. The collection contains speeches and articles on Soviet Jewry by Bayard Rustin from 1960s-1980s. Also included are publications by the executive secretary of the Conference on the Status of Soviet Jews, Moshe Decter— Redemption! Jewish freedom letters from Russia with foreword by Rustin, and "Silence and Yearning: A Report and Analysis of the Status of Soviet Jewry" based on the findings of the Ad Hoc Commssion on the Rights of Soviet Jews, chaired by Rustin.

The Beigel Family Collection holds materials about the Beigel family members from Berlin. The collection consists of post-war personal correspondence between the various family members and documents on restitution claims. It includes original handwritten letters and papers from the time Liane Beigel (née Bick) was in Sweden, as well as official correspondence with the United Restitution Organization after she immigrated to the United States. Also included are her husband Horst Beigel’s restitution claims against Interessengemeinschaft Farbenindustrie AG.

The collection contains the following items pertaining to August Belmont, Sr.: three autograph manuscript items reflecting Belmont's financial connections with the Rothschild family (1841); an autograph letter of introduction to the firm of C.N. de Rothschild, Naples, Italy, on behalf of Charles A. Mann, former state Senator of New York (1852); a letter declining an invitation (1879); and an undated letter, addressed to the President of the United States (most probably Abraham Lincoln) with 17 signatures, among which is Belmont's, recommending John Henley Higbee for a military appointment.
