Arthur Segal Collection

Abstract

Arthur Szyk Collection

Abstract

Collection consists of advertisements, articles, books, lithographs, magazine covers, posters, and stamps that Szyk illustrated between 1931, 1941-1955. Additional items contain exhibit promotions and articles about Szyk's work. Szyk's artwork includes sartoric images of Adolf Hitler and Nazi leaders; patriotic images of President George Washington, Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins, and American ideals; depictions of Eastern European Jewry, Israel's independence, prophets, and sages; and advertisements promoting Asbestos Limited, Casco, Nescafe, North American Aviation, United States Steel, and Utah Radio Products Company. Two Time magazine covers dated from 1941 display Szyk's portraits of Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard and Director of Economic Affairs Hubertus J. van Mook.

Artifacts and Memorabilia in the Hadassah Archives

Abstract

This record group contains three-dimensional objects and printed materials that relate to the history of Hadassah. A bulk of this record group consists of promotional and commemorative objects and awards created by Hadassah for its Annual and Midwinter National Conventions, and for Young Judaea events. Examples of such items include t-shirts, hats, bags, buttons, stationery and keychains. Artifacts created by local Hadassah chapters and regions, as well as awards received by local and national Hadassah leaders from other organizations, are also included. Of a particular interest is the bronze death mask of Henrietta Szold.

The Association was established in 1896 and dissolved in 1990. This record group includes cemetery maps of Mt. A.S.W. Rosenbach collection

Abstract

The collection consists of 8 items relating to A.S.W. Rosenbach's work as a collector and dealer of rare books and manuscripts, and in managing the Rosenbach Company with his brother, an art and antique dealer.

Contains a 1913 catalog of an exhibition organized for the Association of American Etchers, a reprint from Rosenbach's 1927 book "Books and Bidders", and an exhibit of the Free Library of Philadelphia on the history of the Republican Party in celebration of the 1936 Republican National Convention, which featured items from Rosenbach's collection. Also contains programs from a 1935 meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America at which Rosenbach presided, and a program from a 1947 event at the Free Library of Philadelphia in recognition of Rosenbach's presentation of a collection on early American children's literature. A brochure from the current Rosenbach Foundation Museum in Philadelphia is also included.

Audio and Moving Images Materials in the Hadassah Archives

Abstract

This record group is made up of mostly audio and moving images materials, including ¼-inch open audio reels, 16mm film, filmstrips, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, LPs, 3.5 inch floppy disks, and other media, dating from the 1920s up to 2010. The films and audio recordings document Hadassah's efforts to publicize themselves to their members and those outside of Hadassah, by raising awareness of their history, fundraising efforts, and projects in United States and Israel, especially the Hadassah Medical Organization and Youth Aliyah projects and programs. Hadassah also used recordings to document important proceedings, including departmental and board meetings, Midwinter Conferences, and National Conventions.

August Bondi papers

Augusta and Emil Mane Collection

Abstract

This collection contains the personal papers of Augusta (1905-2000) and Emil Mane (1900-1991) of Philippsburg, Baden, Germany. They were forced to sell their iron works business Gebrüder Gutmann in 1938 and, after Emil’s imprisonment in Dachau and time in an English refugee camp, they immigrated to the United States. The collection includes personal correspondence, emigration and restitution materials, recipes, photographs, a family tree, and a list of what happened to the Jews of Philippsburg during or after World War II.

Augusta Ellis Johnson, papers

Contains the correspondence between Mrs. Augusta Ellis Johnson, a Jewish American citizen living in Lima, Peru, and General Alvin P. Horey, United States Minister to Peru. In this correspondence, Ellis Johnson asks Gen. Horey for help securing the release of her 14 year old son, Joseph who was forcibly baptized on October 27, 1868 by Dr. Jose Jesus Aylbon--curat of St. Marcelo--and abducted by the Spanish friars of the Convent of the Descalzos. The dispensation of the incident is not known.

The collection documents the lives of Auguste Glauber, née Mayer and her husband Emil Glauber with references to family members in Austria, the USA, Shanghai and Czechoslovakia. Also included are documents pertaining to family’s textile firm “Leopold Mayer & Sons” as well as Gustl’s family photo album and a recipe book. Some documents are related to the family’s business led by Heinrich (Hans) Mayer, who later emigrated to Shanghai.

Autobiographies of Jewish Youth in Poland

Abstract

The collection consists of more than 300 autobiographies and supplementary biographical materials, such as correspondence, diaries, and documents collected by YIVO in the interest of Jewish youth research. The autobiographies were assembled through public competitions in 1932, 1934, and 1939 directed at Jewish youth aged 16-22. The collection also contains records of the contest, including lists of the contestants, correspondence with them, reports and clippings.

AVI CHAI Foundation Records

The AVI CHAI Collection contains a breadth of files relating to the administrative and outreach activities of the organization, from its founding in 1984 through 2019.

The AVI CHAI records stored at the AJHS relate to the foundation's activities in North America. The records relating to the AVI CHAI's activities in Israel are stored at the archives of the National Library of Israel.

The records consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, financial documents, digital files, and printed materials that chronicle AVI CHAI’s administrative communication and outreach programming. The collection consists of physical paper records (see detailed breakdown below), born-digital files (including computer files), as well as audiovisual materials such as audiocassettes, microcassettes and DVDs. There are some 35mm slides, but otherwise very few photographic prints or negatives. Of note in the collection are materials that outline the foundation’s research on, and enthusiastic support of, Jewish day schools, camps, teacher training and libraries.

Administration files include by-laws, incorporation documents, and insurance policies, among others.

Board records are comprised of meeting materials, such as minutes and agendas. They document the philosophy, direction and activities of the organization.

Communications files consist primarily the files of Deena K. Fuchs. They include media kits, graphics, working files for annual reports, and other materials.

Files related to AVI CHAI finances include investment portfolio documentation as well as quarterly and annual reports.

The core of the foundation’s history can be found in its Programs files which document the various programs initiated or supported by AVI CHAI. They include detailed files on the foundation’s loans to schools (including building programs) and to summer camps. Also included in this series are files relating to AVI CHAI communications activities, such as media kits, graphics, working files for annual reports, and other materials.
