RG 245.1: HIAS Board of Directors and Steering Committees: Minutes of the Board of Directors and of the annual meetings. Minutes of meetings of permanent and ad hoc committees of HIAS, including the Executive Committee, Committee on Work in Foreign Countries, U.S. Immigration Stations (later Committee on Overseas Work), Budget, Membership, House and Shelter, Citizenship, Law and Work in Palestine.

RG 245.2: HIAS Ellis Island Bureau: This collection consists mainly of briefs and other legal documents on immigration, deportations, and similar matters, ranging from 1905 until 1923. It also contains material on general HIAS activities.

RG 245.3: HIAS Foreign Relations Bureau Family-Search Case Files: This record subgroup contains the "case files" of people in the United States who sought the help of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in locating their relatives in Europe after World War I and during the interwar period. The files consist of letters of inquiry, HIAS search application forms, correspondence with the inquiring parties, financial support letters and some official U.S. government correspondence.

A significant amount of correspondence is between members of HIAS and HICEM from different global branches, as well as members of other advocacy organizations. Most materials are in English, Yiddish, or Hebrew, with exceptions noted.

It is geographically divided and covers the time periods as noted below. All materials are in English, unless otherwise noted.

RG 245.5: Records of HIAS-HICEM Main Office in Europe: This collection, a sub-group of RG 245 HIAS, includes all existing records of the main HICEM offices in Europe prior to and during World War II. There are also some records of the post-World War II period relating to the merger of HICEM with HIAS in 1945 and HIAS’s work with displaced persons. Records of the Lisbon office of HICEM are in the sub-group HICEM and HIAS Office in Lisbon, RG 245.6. The bulk of the European HIAS records of the post-war period can be found in the sub-group European Offices of the HIAS, RG 245.7.
