Biographical / Historical

Founded in 1954 by former members of the Jewish People's Fraternal Order (JPFO) of the International Workers' Order (IWO) when the latter order was dissolved during the McCarthy era. In 1930, a group of members of the Zwanitz-Podolier Br. 277 Workmen's Circle broke away to join the IWO as its Branch 277. This branch merged with another Workmen's Circle branch to form the Podolier Br. 277 I.W.O., later affiliated with yet another branch, renaming itself the Baltic Podolier Br. 277 IWO. Was affiliated with the Emma Lazarus Club #277 IWO. Some of the members of Branch 277 supported the Zwanitz-Podolier Relief Committee. In 1954, members of Branch 277 formed the East Bronx Cultural Society. This later merged with the former Bessarabier Br. 302 IWO, to form the Bessarabier Podolier B.S., Inc.
