Scope and Content Note

Sylvia A. Herskowitz Archive documents professional and to a lesser degree personal life of Sylvia A. Herskowitz. Materials collected here shed light on her involvement with the Women's Branch of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America and various Parent Associations. The collection consists of correspondence, documents, photographs, printed materials, sheet music, and writings.

The bulk of personal materials consists of greeting cards, but there is also a small amount of family correspondence as well. Additionally, there are school documents and essays, poetry, photographs, some financial documents, such as bank statements, and materials dealing with the Hermann Axelrod Scholarship.

Other materials include publications with the Women's Branch of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America Newsletter constituting the larger part of the printed materials.

Furthermore there are writings by Sylvia A. Herskowitz as well as a small amount of writings by other authors.

Biographical Note

Sylvia Axelrod Herskowitz, an educator and administrator, was born in New York on July 25, 1928. She graduated from Hunter College and later from Herzliah Hebrew Institute, concentrating in art and Jewish studies. Early in her career, she taught art and early childhood education.

In 1962, Sylvia A. Herskowitz began her long lasting affiliation with the Women’s Branch of The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, and became their program director and editor of the Branch of The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America Newsletter.

During the same period Sylvia A. Herskowitz was also involved with the National Association of Hebrew Day Schools. She organized conferences and edited their weekly Torah Series.

In 1976 Sylvia A. Herskowitz became a director of the Yeshiva University Museum.
