Spiegelberg Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a few letters sent to prominent egyptologist Wilhelm Spiegelberg from colleagues regarding an antisemitic backlash against his university appointment, as well as a modest group of his family papers, especially those pertaining to his grandfather, a veterinarian in Hameln and Hannover districts.
The letters in the first folder relate an antisemitic backlash against the appointment of Wilhelm Spiegelberg as professor at the University of Munich, when he replaced professor F.W. Bissing, a supporter of the National Socialist party. This correspondence includes a couple of letters of support from colleage Kurt Sethe, as well as a letter of apology from Bissing dated 1930.
The bulk of the collection, however consists of family documents, especially residency and professional permits issued to the veterinarian Joseph Spiegelberg, Wilhelm Spiegelberg's grandfather, who practiced in Hameln and Hannover district. The remaining materials include family birth and vital records, and some notes and research materials on the Spiegelberg family genealogy.
