Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of music from the estate of cantor and teacher Simon Spier. It also includes a letter describing the gifts to the LBI of Judaica in the estate of Simon Spier (the letter describes materials beyond what is found in this collection).

The music includes special sheet music inserts from the Israelitische Familienblatt Hamburg; two books of music for religious services, including one identified as coming from the synagogue at Wesel am Rhein, and a mix of secular and Jewish sheet music. The sheet music includes: Hiawatha by Neil Moret; Synagogale Kompositionen by B. Gutmann; an undated booklet of German folk songs missing its cover; Ein Geheimnislied by Heinrich Weinreis; Prinz Eugen by Carl Loewe; three different arrangements of La Juive by F. Halévy; Es ist genug by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy; Nagykaniszsaer Gottesdienstliche Gesänge für Israeliten by Leo Kartschmaroff; Soldatenlieder by Konrad Ramrath; Kegler Gut Holz! By Wilhelm Lindemann; The Rabbi of Bacharach by Josef Neger; Naarizecho by Leopold Wolf; and Gottesdienstliche Gesänge für Israeliten by M. Rosenhaupt.

Biographical Note

Simon Spier was born in Zwesten (Hesse) in 1864. He was a cantor and teacher of the Jewish school in Wesel (Rhineland). He emigrated to Palestine in 1937 and died there in 1951.
