Education records, correspondence, and friendship albums (albums amicorum) pertaining to members of the Steinthal family in Dessau, Köthen, and Coswig.

All three friendship albums contain inscriptions by Hermann Cohen, Coswig, Aug. 1852; Oct. 1857; and Oct. 1873.

Biographical Note

Eduard Steinthal was a cousin to the linguist and philosopher Heymann Steinthal.

The Israelitische Franzschule in Dessau, Germany, was founded in 1799 by its first director, David Fränkel. In 1806, Fränkel and Joseph Wolff published Sulamith, the first German language, Jewish periodical.

The philosopher Hermann Cohen, founder of the Marburg School of philosophy, was a frequent guest at Steinthals’.
