Scope and Content Note

This collection contains personal and official papers and correspondence, and vital records documents pertaining to Fritz and Lilly Fabian and their families. The first folder contains birth certificates, vaccination cards, and other documents including James Silberstein's military passport. The second folder contains identification cards and personal papers from the time of the Nazi dictatorship, especially Lilly Fabian's papers from her time in the Theresienstadt camp and a short memoir by Fritz about life under the National Socialist oppression. This folder also contains Lilly and Fritz Fabian's Swiss wedding certificate. The final folder contains correspondence and documents regarding the Fabian's efforts to regain German citizenship and a small group of materials pertaining to restitution claims.

Biographical Note

Lilly Fabian was born Lilli Lehmann in Hamburg in 1892. She married James Silberstein in Berlin in 1920, was deported to Theresienstadt, and married Fritz Fabian in 1947 in Switzerland. In 1957 Lilly and Fritz Fabian regained German citizenship. Lilly Fabian died in Locarno in 1981.

This collection contains personal and official papers and correspondence, and vital records documents pertaining to Fritz and Lilly Fabian and their families, including Lilly Fabian's papers from her time in the Theresienstadt camp and a short memoir by Fritz about life under the National Socialist oppression. The other major group of materials in this collection pertains to Fritz and Lilly Fabian's restitution claims and efforts to regain German citizenship.
