Hubert Pollack Research Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 3858

Scope and Content Note

The Hubert Pollack Research Collection consists of Hubert Pollack's accumulated research into his family's genealogy. The collection consists primarily of extensive research questionnaires on individual family members, their related notes, and some excerpts of a planned book on the family along with notes on the collection that mention Israeli archives where Hubert Pollack's research may be found.

The collection's numerous questionnaires provide many details on members of the Pollack family. They include basic information such as life dates, father's name, places and dates of birth, marriage and death and information on spouses. They also record individuals' language abilities, education, and military service in addition to information on career and employment activities. Of particular interest is the final section of the questionnaires, which relates to the individual's Jewishness (Jüdischkeit), and records the following data: participation in the lighting of Sabbath and Jahrzeit candles; regular, occasional or holiday attendance at synagogues; keeping a kosher household; holding a Seder; Kashrut during Passover; types of services attendance (Orthodox, Liberal, or Conservative) and any participation in Jewish organizations. There are many family members for which no religious data has been recorded.

Hubert Pollack's handwritten notes are located in folder 4, but also at the end of folders 2 and 3, following the questionnaire forms. These latter are often drafts of questionnaires, sometimes including notes on how their data was collected, such as from conversations with individuals. The notes of folder 4 includes some drafts of questionnaires as well, but also a table of historical time periods, listing which generations of the family lived during which periods and also some notes that portray his conjectures and thoughts regarding the research.
