Scope and Content Note

The collection contains mainly letters written to Isidor Popper before and during the German invasion of Czechoslovakia, asking for asylum in the United States. Also included are business records pertaining to Isidor Popper.

There is very little known about his personal life. The collection concentrates on Isidor Popper’s efforts to issue 32 immigration affidavits for relatives and friends in Austria and Czechoslovakia. Once the U. S. State Department told him that his own quota for issuing affidavits had been filled, he urged his American friends to do so. There is a folder for each of the 32 affidavits and all the correspondence pertaining to them. A list of the 32 names is attached.

Biographical Note

Isidor Popper immigrated to the United States in 1913. He was married and had a son. He started his own business, import and distributing of surgical supplies, named Popper & Klein.
