Buchau Jewish Community Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a original and photocopied clippings and articles, documents, booklets, photographs and pieces of writing pertaining to the Jewish community of Buchau. The following individuals, families and institutions are mentioned in this collection: Morris Vierfelder, Alfred Einstein, Sig Einstein, Volkshochschule Bad Buchau, Hans Garbelmann, Jacob Bernheim, Joseph E. Erlanger, Conrad family, and Max J. Mändle.
Folder one consists of original and photocopied newspaper and magazine clippings related to the Jewish community of Buchau, the Holocaust, the November progrom and commemorative events in German communities, Jewish communities in Germany, and the Martin Walser debate. Folder two contains a written accompaniment to the Volkshochschule Bad Buchau's 1998 exhibition Jüdisches Leben in Buchau. In folder three are photocopies of documents and related clippings pertaining to Jews and Jewish communities from Buchau. Folder four contains numerous mimeographed copies of the newsletter Buchauer Nachrichten. Addressed to the Jews of Buchau, these newsletters were written by Morris Vierfelder, Alfred Einstein, and Sig Einstein. Folder five is comprised of a variety of photocopied materials pertaining to the Jewish community in Buchau. These include an 1828 list of names of Jews and Christians in Buchau ("Besitzerliste von Christen und Juden"), a collection of stories and anecdotes from 1935 regarding life in Buchau ("Merkwürdigkeiten, Anekdoten, Besonderheiten aus dem Leben der jüdischen Gemeinde Buchau-Kappel"), as well as an 1879 cemetery list from Buchau. In folder six are writings about the history and persecution of Jewish communities in Buchau. Also included are two photographs of the Synagogue Gemeinde Buchau built in 1839, the only German synagogue with a steeple and a bell.
