Bendix Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains documents relating to the Bendix family, particularly to Fritz Bendix and his wife, Johanna Bendix née Hahn. There are also many papers and photographs concerning the family company, a linen factory in Silesia.
In addition to some birth and marriage certificates, folder 1 contains a copy of The Financial Record dated 1900, a weekly New York publication, with an article highlighting Max Bendix's textile factory. Folder 2 contains numerous documents concerning the efforts of Fritz and Johanna to emigrate from Germany including affidavits, tax documents, transit visa information, telegrams, booking information, letters of reference, etc. Folder 3 contains affidavits for Ingeborg and Evelyn Bendix as well as the extensive official itemized packing list of Fritz and Johanna.
The commemorative book in folder 4 was given to the family company, Julius Bendix Söhne, by Joseph and Senta Magath on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the company. Sumptuously produced, it features a cover with ivory, stone, and wood inlay, and includes clippings and inscriptions by family and well-wishers from 1920-1950. Thus it contains a record of the fate of the company and family members. Also in folder 4 are photographs of some family members and of the factory prior to and after its destruction during World War II.
