Bernhard Family Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 25712

Scope and Content Note

The Bernhard Family Collection contains family papers, photographs, and correspondence via postcard. The family papers contain verses written by Max Bernhard, birth and marriage certificates, and Heinz Bernhard's passport and 1938 planner. Heinz also went by Henry when he immigrated to the United States from Germany.

The bulk of the collection is comprised of handwritten postcards which predominantly span the 1870s to the 1890s. These postcards originate from over ten different countries, mostly from continental Europe but also from the United States, Argentina, India, and Great Britain. These postcards are addressed to members of the Bernhard family as well as acquaintances.

The collection also contains a number of family photographs, most of which depict Max Bernhard (1836-1927), his son Paul (1874-1941) and his wife Lilly, and their children Heinz and Hilde. These photographs include mostly portraits with some group photographs, including Hilde's wedding and Max's ninetieth birthday party.
