Scope and Content Note

Copies of official documents pertaining to Berlak’s removal from official positions by the Nazis (1938-1939) and to British naturalization (1947). Also included are certificates for Sophie (mother) and Milli (sister?) Berlak regarding their support of the German war effort during World War I (1916).

Published writings by Berlak primarily about retail business, banking and other topics of economic interest; 1921-1932.

Correspondence (circa 50 pages) pertaining to Kartell-Convent; 1945-1950.

Report by Hermann Berlak about his internment in the English camp of Onchan on the Isle of Man from July to October 1940 (?), London, typescript, 10 pages.

Biographical Note

Born in Posen in 1896. Married to Ruth Auguste; he was a son-in-law of Rabbi Leo Baeck. Trustee Syndikus of the Reichsverband des Kreditgebenden Einzelhandels. Emigrated to England, interned in Onchan internment camp in 1940. Became British citizen in 1947. Active member of and held leadership positions in the Kartell-Convent, a German-Jewish fraternity ("German students of Jewish faith").

The collection consists of copies of official documents; publications; correspondence with Kartell-Convent fraternity brothers; and a report about Berlak’s internment as an enemy alien in the English camp of Onchan on the Isle of Man.
