Scope and Content Note
Seven original letters in the handwriting of Heinrich Heine (AR 855) may be found in folder 1. The bulk of the collection consists of various materials which describe primarily Heine’s mixed perception in Germany throughout the 20th century. In addition, there are photocopies of his letters, as well as manuscripts and other materials pertaining to Heinrich Heine and his family. Articles in typescripts deal with various aspects of Heine’s work.

Biographical Note
Heinrich Heine (Dec. 13, 1797 – Feb. 17, 1856) was one of the most significant German poets of the 19th century. He was also a journalist, essayist, and literary critic. His political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. Heine spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris.
