Bauer-Gross Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
The Bauer-Gross Family Collection holds material on individual family members, family photographs, and writings. The material consists of correspondence, immigration papers, an academic confirmation, newspapers, a report, a manuscript, medical documents, identification documents, military papers, a birth certificate, an award certificate, obituaries, and a prenuptial agreement. Particularly prominent in this collection is the material on the immigration to the USA, the family research and the process of creating the family tree, and information about Meta Bauer.
The first series of this collection holds material on the family members Lazarus Bauer, Lazarus Gross, and Meta Bauer, on the emigration of Meta Bauer, her brother Emil Gross an his family, and her sister-in-law’s sister and her family. Their immigration was supported by Max Gross, Meta’s and Emil’s brother, and his wife Frieda. Here one will also find all the information on the family tree’s creation and other material like correspondence, deposit slips, vaccination certificates, and so on.
Series II consists of photographs displaying either private/personal occasions, or portraits taken by a photographer. However, most of the photographs are unidentified.
The last series of the collection comprises published writings including a manuscript on the history of Koenigheim, three editions of a newspaper published in the hometown of some family members, and a report on the Reichskristallnacht, written in 1958.

Biographical Note
Lazarus Bauer was born 1873 and died on August 25, 1930 in Koenigheim, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. He was a merchant and the owner of the company Lazarus Gross II, which he inherited from his father-in-law Lazarus Gross. Lazarus Bauer married Meta Gross (born in 1881) in the early 20th century. One of their children was Werner Bauer, who was born in 1920. Approximately 13 years after Lazarus Bauer's death, Meta left Germany and immigrated to the United States with the help of her brother Max Gross. She lived in New York.
