Auerbach Rivers Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains copies of various documents used in genealogical research of the Auerbach, Fass, Bergstein and related families. It includes photographs, census records, birth and death certificates, naturalization records and a marriage record as well as various government documents such as social security forms and tax records.
The collection is divided into seven folders; each folder has photographs and family sheets listing spouses, children and basic biographical information. Most of the folders contain birth records, death records and census information with a few naturalization certificates as well. The folder on the Auerbach family contains a five-generation family tree. The Fass family folder has a log of the Basic School in Ulanow listing the professions of the Jewish population in 1895 and 1899-1900. Folder 6 comprises information of the Hushin family including lists of Jewish inhabitants of Riga in the 1880s. Folder 7 contains various documents that could not be identified as pertaining to a specific family including a photograph, a faded obituary, death records and several lists in Cyrillic.

Biographical Note
There are three main family names that are encountered frequently in this collection with an extensive record: the Auerbach, Fass and Bergstein families. The Fass family (alternative spelling Fasz) was from Austria and Tyczyn in southern Poland, and the Bergstein family was from Ulanow (today Ulaniv, Ukraine) in southern Poland. The Auerbach family was from Riga and Polotsk in northern Belarus. The family record for the Fasses and the Bergsteins go back to the 1890s and 1880s, respectively. Simon Bergstein and Ruth Helen Maurer were a couple; their son was Sam Bergstein and his wife was Ester Fass. Sam's daughter was Lillian Bergstein and her husband was Martin Auberbach. Their daughter's name was Dorothy Rivers.
