Biographical Note

Walter Herlinger left Munich in 1933 afraid of being arrested by the Gestapo. He traveled through France, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt and ended up in the Philippines, where he worked for a German engineering company. At night he fought with the Philippine Guerillas against the Japanese. He married an American nurse named Elizabeth in 1941, and the couple had a daughter, Anne. Walter was captured by the Japanese in 1944 and interned as a POW, his fate is unknown. Elizabeth and Anne returned to the United States.
