Scope and Content Note

This collection contains clippings, photocopied documents, a bibliography, and manuscripts pertaining to the history of Kassel and its Jewish community.

The first folder contains municipal tax statements from 1827, a list of publications related to the Jews in Kassel, clippings concerning the anniversaries of the Kassel synagogue and Jewish school, as well as photocopied records from the police which include a list of Jews living in Kassel in 1936. Folder two consists of Ludwig Horwitz's manuscript, Die Geschichte der Kasseler Juden bis zur Verlegung des Landesrabbinats von Witzenhausen nach Kassel, 1772, a three part history of the Jews in Kassel from the 13th to the 18th century with a sketch of the Jewish cemetery. In folder three is Die neuere Geschichte bis zur Gegenwart, Felix Lazarus' manuscript about the history of Kassel from 1772 to 1929. This includes population statistics, information regarding occupations, community elders and leaders, institutions and organizations, as well as Jews living in Kassel. The fourth folder contains Theodor Dellevie's manuscript Die Rechtslage der Juden nach 1813 with charts and statistics pertaining to the civil status of the Jews in Kassel after 1813. Also included is a petition to the Hohe Ständeversammlung (assembly of estates) in Kassel in 1831 with a list of attendees (elders) from various Jewish communities in Hesse.
