Karl Schwarz Collection

Identifier: AR 1904

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains notes and notebooks related to the art trade, art collecting and art provenance.

Almost the entire collection consists of handwritten notes regarding art collectors, auctions, and museums. Some of these notes are loose, but most are bound into handmade booklets. Each book is composed of information handwritten on cards regarding art historians, art collectors, and art related resources. The first two notebooks are titled Jewish art historians in Germany. The first booklet alphabetically lists Jewish art historians in Germany with biographical, professional, and collection information included, while the second booklet focuses more on art history and Jewish art, as well as on listings of Jewish art museums, teachers, literature, and press. The third notebook contains information on Jewish art collectors, including short biographical notes and information on their collections. Information on libraries and miscellaneous collections in America is also included. Finally, the fourth notebook contains Schwarz's biographical notes about Jewish art dealers and publishers in Germany.
