Scope and Content Note

This collection includes theater programs, clippings, a company history, and a few personal documents and papers pertaining to the maternal relatives of Margot Gerson née Horwitz, including the Stern family (especially the opera singer Frieda Ernesti (Lachmann-Stern), the Hess/Hessdörffer families, and the Schiff family.

The Hess/Hessdörffer family chronicle and tree provides useful information on the linkages between these individuals and families. Of particular note is the small collection of theatrical programs and clippings pertaining to Frieda Lachmann Stern's (stage name Frieda Ernesti) career, which included several engagements at the German front during World War I.

Biographical Note

Margot Gerson's mother, Erna Horwitz-Stern (1890-1951), was born in Aschaffenburg and lived in Berlin. Her siblings included Annie Stern (later Schiff), Frieda Lachmann-Stern, and Otto Stern, a banker in Switzerland and Paris who died in World War I.

Margot Gerson's aunt, Frieda Lachmann-Stern, studied in Prague and Vienna and became a notable opera singer under the stage name Frieda Ernesti, sometimes Frieda Lachmann-Ernesti. Her engagements included: Deutsches Landestheater Prague, Stadtheater Kiel, Fronttheater der 1. Armee during World War I, Rostock. She married Julian Lachmann, emigrated to Great Britain and later to the United States, where she died in 1950.
