Margot Garon Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains documents pertaining to Margot Garon née Straus, her father Jakob Straus, and her grandfather Hermann Straus.
Folder 1 contains documents pertaining to Margot Garon's visits to Germany, particularly her 2007 visit with her family on the occasion of her 80th birthday. Included is the transcript of a speech Garon gave at a New Orleans high school in 2008, in which she discusses her childhood in Kirchheimbolanden, life in Germany after Hitler's rise to power, help from her family's non-Jewish neighbors, emigration from Germany to the United States, and 2007 trip to Germany with her family; report on her 2007 trip to Germany, particularly Kirchheimbolanden, with her family; and letter and clippings regarding her family's 2007 trip to Kirchheimbolanden. Also included is an invitation to a 1979 school reunion in Kirchheimbolanden.
Folder 2 contains documents pertaining to Margot Garon's father Jakob Straus, including handwritten poems; letters; military pass and certificates pertaining to his service in World War I; birth certificate; and driver's license.
Folder 3 contains documents pertaining to Margot Garon's grandfather Hermann Straus, including handwritten poems; military pass; and military certificates.

Biographical Note
Margot Garon née Straus was born in 1927 in Kirchheimbolanden. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1937 after relatives in Monroe, Louisiana, obtained visas for them.
Margot Garon's father Jakob Straus was born in 1890 in Gauersheim. He was a grain merchant in Kirchheimbolanden.
Jakob Straus's father Hermann Straus was born in 1847 in Gauersheim.
