Biographical Note

Margarethe Geiringer was born on May 19, 1894, in Vienna to Alfred Geiringer and his wife Ernestine née Papanik. She was an opera singer with the Chemnitz Opera, where she used the stage name Margarethe Gerwin. After losing her position due to racial laws, she returned to Vienna and then immigrated to the United States in 1939.
