Eugen and Nanette Wassermann Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 6535

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the papers of Nanette and Eugen Wassermann, in particular those regarding their emigration to the United States and a large number pertaining to their leather goods factory Hch. Wassermann jun. in Nuremberg.

Intermixed with the emigration documents in the first folder are some additional papers regarding the Wassermanns' will. The emigration documents themselves consist of affidavits, various correspondence with government offices in Germany, the United States, and some Latin American countries, as well as other papers relevant to the emigration process. With the exception of a humorous Purim photograph (showing Purim revelers in Bavarian folk costumes in 1901) in folder 3, virtually of the remaining materials are directly related to the firm Hch. Wassermann.

The second folder contains a binder, mostly filled with cost analysis tables for the Wassermann factory's various leatherware products (mostly luggage and bags) and inventories of equipment and products. At the front of the binder, however, is a document about a labor dispute. The third folder houses a rich fonds of advertising material, catalogues and product lists, and order forms from the firm, many richly illustrated with cartoon drawings and images of the products, mostly leather luggage, bags, and accessories. Aside from the advertising material and ephemera, this folder also includes the aforementioned Purim photograph and a few items relevant to Nanette Wassermann's marzipan wholesale business that she operated after emigration to the United States. The following folders contain recipes and notes for cosmetics, a business venture that the Wassermann's seem to have worked on in the years prior to their emigration. In the final folder are small pattern pieces for leatherware products.
