Scope and Contents

This collection contains genealogical information and documents related to the Esslinger, Bloch, and Leib families from Württemberg, Konstanz and Zurich, as well as Isidor Esslinger who immigrated to the US State of Indiana in the 1850s.

Folders 1 and 2 contain a family tree of the Leib, Bloch, and Esslinger families and other genealogical materials, as well as explanatory correspondence and published articles by Otto S. Leib.

Folder 3 holds various documents for members of the Bloch, Esslinger, and Leib families from Zurich, Gailingen, and Württemberg.

Folder 4 pertains to families Leib and Bloch and to the town of Konstanz.

Legal documents pertaining to Isidor Esslinger in Germany (Wuertemberg) and in the United States (Indiana)are held in folder 5 and in the rare oversize folder ROS 11, which also includes a letter of appointment to be a customs appraiser of merchandise for the Port of Evansville, Indiana, signed by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Biographical Note

Isidor (Isaak) Esslinger was born in Muehringen/Baden in 1833 and died in Evansville, Indiana, in 1908. He immigrated to the US and fought on the Union side in the Civil War in Indiana's 1st German Infantry Regiment. After the war he returned to Germany to marry Jenny Gut. They returned to Evansville, where Isidor opened a jewelry store.

Other members of the Esslinger / Bloch / Leib family intermarried and lived in Konstanz and Zurich.
