Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of translated correspondence from 1938-1942 to Arthur Josefsberg who lived in Brooklyn, United States. His parents Klara and Berl Josefsberg and his sister Rosie wrote him from Vienna, Austria. Arthur’s brother Joszi and Joszi’s wife Valy wrote from Chelles, France and later Joszi wrote from the internment camp Camp des Milles, France. The correspondence also includes a few letters by other friends or family members. The letters contain family matters and the process of obtaining affidavits for Arthur’s relatives.

Biographical Note

Arthur Josefsberg immigrated from Vienna to the United States in 1938. Arthur’s brother Joszi and sister-in-law Valy obtained an exit visa to Argentina and left Vienna in 1938 for France, where they endured various deprivations. Joszi was later deported to the internment camp Camp des Milles. Joszi and Valy escaped to Switzerland in 1942 and immigrated to the United States in 1946. Arthur’s grandparents Karl and Berl Josefsberg as well as his sister did not receive a financial affidavit of support for an American visa on time and were deported from Vienna in 1942. Their final fate is unknown.
