Albert B. Oppenheimer Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a considerable amount of correspondence relating to Albert Oppenheimer's restitution and inheritance cases, as well as a number of personal, family, and vital records (mostly photocopies) and a large number of photographs.
Folder 1 contains a number of vital records such as birth and death certificates, as well as some of Oppenheimer's personal papers like educational records and identification cards, and a few family papers regarding inheritance. Also in this folder are several letters of recommendation for Oppenheimer written at the time of his emigration to the United States. The second folder contains legal correspondence and transcribed documents related to Oppenheimer's claims cases regarding his family inheritance and his pension. It is likely that several of the documents in the first folder, many of which are copies generated after the war, also played a role in the restitution claims. The remaining materials are of a personal nature and consist of letters and photographs. Notably, there is a handwritten condolence letter from Max M. Warburg. The photographs show Oppenheimer and friends on occasions such a birthdays and holiday parties and on trips throughout the United States. There are also several portrait photographs, and a few of the photographs date to Oppenheimer's pre-emigration life in Hamburg.
