M. Poppelauer Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains correspondence and documents related to the liquidation of the Saenger family's assets, including those of their Jewish bookstore and publisher M. Poppelauer, as well as some materials on the related restitution claims.
In the first folder are documents and correspondence, primarily between Erwin Saenger in London and his German attorney Gerhard Mamlok, regarding the liquidation of the assets of the bookshop and publishing house M. Poppelauer, and attempts to have the assets and some of the inventory transferred to England during the late 1930s. There are also some materials pertaining to the family assets, as well as some corresponence with Saenger's parents. A few items pertaining to the later restitution claims are also interspersed in this folder. The second folder contains a few items of correspondence with the United Restitution Organization regarding the Saenger family's claims.
In the following folder is correspondence regarding Lotte Saenger's attempts to find out the fate of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Manheim of Liegnitz (Legnica). Finally, the firm M. Poppelauer's handwritten customer address book is in the last folder. Inserted into the book are several calling cards and some items of correspondence, some of which date to the early 20th century.

Biographical Note
Erwin Saenger was born on May 4, 1907, and died on October 18, 1979. He was the son of Jacob Saenger and grandson of Moritz Poppelauer, founder of Verlagshaus M. Poppelauer. He was married to Lotte Saenger née Mannheim of Liegnitz whose parents Adolf and Else Mannheim perished in the war. Erwin Saenger's mother was deported and died in Theresienstadt in 1942. Erwin and Lotte succeeded in emigrating to England after Kristallnacht.
The publishing house and bookshop M. Poppelauer of Neue Friedrichstrasse was founded on May 22, 1860, by Dr. Moritz Poppelauer. It specialized in Judaica.
