Aryeh Ben-David Collection
Scope and Contents
Folder 1 contains Ben-David's correspondence with the Frankfurt a. M. Stadtarchiv (German, 1968-1978) and individuals in Israel, England and the USA (German, English and Hebrew, 1968-69), on the topic of Jewish history in Frankfurt. Folder 2 contains copies of manuscripts and archival documents pertaining to the history of Jews in Frankfurt. Folder 3 contains bibliographical lists, copies of articles and maps pertaining to Ben-David's research on the Jewish economy in Palestine during the Roman period. Folder 4 contains publications by Ben-David pertaining to the Jewish economy and numismatics in the Talmud. Most of these bear hand-written dedications by the author (mostly Hebrew, 1961-1977). Folder 5 contains postcards and photographs of Frankfurt and familiar German figures. Folder 6 contains photographs of Jewish life of Frankfurt – synagogues, rabbis, school children etc.

Biographical / Historical
Arye Ben-David was born as Leo Löwenthal in Frankfurt in 1904 into an orthodox family and migrated to Palestine in 1934. He lived in Jerusalem and worked at the Israeli Ministry of Trade and Industry, while at the same time engaging in his independent research. Ben-David passed away in 1979.
