Scope and Contents

Folder I contains hand-written notes, correspondence, photographs and copies of manuscripts pertaining to the Leinkauf and Blitz families and their relationship with Theodor Herzl (1889-1991).

Folder II contains the correspondence between Ophir and Ursula Randt and others, regarding an exhibition on Jewish life held in Grindel, Hamburg (1987), and correspondence with other friends, scholars and institutes, among them Julius Margolinsky, Avraham Margaliyot, Anton Grossmann, and the Institut für Zeitgeschichte Munich (1958- 1987).

Folder III contains manuscripts of lectures delivered by Ophir: a draft of a lecture titled Jewish Religious Socialism (Jüdisch religiöser Sozialismus) held at the fourth annual conference of Tse’irei Mizrachi of Germany, on December 25-26, 1932; a transcript of a lecture in 1979; various versions of a lecture on the history of Tse’irei Mzrachi (Hebrew, 1981); an untitled lecture on the Jewish community of Hamburg, delivered in Hamburg (undated). The folder also contains three photographs of Ophir(?) and others at Yad Vashem, dated March 29, 1978.

Biographical / Historical

Baruch Zwi Ophir (formerly Benno Offenburg, 1910-2004) grew up in Hamburg and was active in the Mizrachi religious Zionist group. After his migration to Palestine he lived in Jerusalem and became a scholar of Jewish history.
