Correspondence in the collection is between Senta K. Simon and extended family members, fellow genealogists, researchers, and archives and historical societies regarding her family history. Accompanying the correspondence are materials including family trees and histories, photocopies of articles and book excerpts, catalog printouts and call slips, photocopies and printouts of archival documents and other pertinent records, and notes from her research trips and on the materials she received.
Research files assembled by Simon consist of correspondence on family history, histories of the Jewish communities of various locations and the locations themselves, lists of individuals from relevant locations who perished in the Holocaust, photocopies and printouts of relevant records and documents, photocopies of book excerpts, clippings and articles, family trees and histories, biographical information, individual and family group work sheets, handwritten notes, and photographs.
Work sheets and lists document information on individuals found within Senta K. Simon’s family research files, in contrast to the research files, which provides information on families and communities. Individual work sheets found in Series III include the individual’s name, birth date and place, occupation, military service, death and burial date and place, information regarding parents, spouse, and children, residences and dates, references and sources, and an option to include further data on the reverse. Lists include both lists compiled during Simon’s genealogical research, as well as spreadsheets generated from her family history records.

Biographical / Historical
Senta K. Simon née Katz was born March 26, 1930, in Geisa, Germany. Her father Friedrich (Fred) Katz was born February 13, 1894, in Mühlfeld, Germany, and died December 10, 1979, in New York City. His parents were Hermann Katz and Fanny Katz née Fleischmann. Senta’s mother Anna Katz née Kahn was born May 20, 1901, in Simmershausen, Germany, and died June 4, 2000, in Queens. Her parents were Leopold Kahn and Selma Kahn née Rosenthal.
Fred, Anna, and Senta left Geisa in January 1940 to immigrate to the United States. They departed from Antwerp aboard the Westernland on January 20, 1940, and landed in Hoboken on February 3. From there they went to Woodside, Queens, where the family lived for many years.
Sent K. Simon married Horst (Harry) Simon on September 6, 1953, in New York City. Harry was born November 19, 1925, in Berlin, Germany, and died August 5, 1997, in Boca Raton, Florida. Their daughter Karen Michele Simon was born September 11, 1956, in Queens and their son Richard Gary Simon was born August 14, 1959, in New York City.
Harry Simon’s parents were Gustav Simon and Margarete Simon née Beihoff. Gustav Simon was born September 13, 1899, in Berlin and died March 9, 1945, in Dachau. His parents were Wolf Simon and Lina Simon née Friedeberg. Margarete Beihoff was born January 6, 1903, in Berlin and died March 15, 1943, in Auschwitz. Her parents were Felix Beihoff and Lina Beihoff née Ettisch.
Senta K. Simon embarked upon decades of genealogical research, in which she ultimately recorded over 4,000 family members, because hers was the last generation that was able to work with old German records and because she wanted to ensure that those family members who perished in the Holocaust would be remembered. Simon died in 2018.
