Scope and Contents

Box I contains diaries for the years 1928, 1946-1957, 1961-1963, 1967-1970, and four undated notebooks. The first diary is titled "Unsere Fahrt nach Zell am See, Sommer 1928"; apart from this one, all the other dairies were written in Jerusalem. The box also contains two postcards, sent to Ehrfurt, Germany (1.9.1938, 2.11.1938); two copies of a poetry book by Ruth Freund-Joachimsthal titled "Ausgewählte Gedichte" (Jerusalem, 1943); a typescript translation of "T'mol Shilshom" by S. Y. Agnon, signed by Freund (undated); an unsigned manuscript titled "40 Jahre Baruch Karu" (photocopy, undated). Box II contains diaries for the years 1971-1985.

Please note that the numbering of the notebooks, as well as the dates of the calendars, don't necessarily reflect the chronological order of their content.

Biographical / Historical

Ruth Helge Joachimsthal was born in Dresden in 1914 and migrated to Palestine in 1933, where she married Peter Freund. The couple returned to Germany in 1937 to visit Peter Freund's mother. During their visit Ruth was detained in Buchenwald and released through the intervention of her father in-law Ismar Freund. After the 1938 Pogrom the couple migrated to the USA and then moved back to Palestine. Ruth lived in Jerusalem and worked as a qualified librarian at The National Insurance Institute and in the State Comptroller’s office. She passed away in 1985.
